- Before the days of the watchman, and before the forest spread till the horizon, there lay upon the wretched forest floor a limp figure that lacked the slightest thread of hope.
Yet once he had been a hero among men, greater than any that has wallked the earth,.but those days had past, he was now a mere reflection of a man drained of all emotion, save pity for himself.- For there was no pity from other sources, even the birds would tear the skin from his flesh, and the beasts gnaw at his limbs. He was the reason for their disease, and he would be the cure for their hunger.
The light flooded in through the trees, even though the sun was blotted out by the smoke belched out by the cities. The smoke was not a natural smoke, it came from deep, dark places in the very bowels of the nearest city. - All that it touched soon withered and decayed.Few were left alive at this time, but those who were hid away in fear for their lives. But not him...he was destined to lie there till the sun was taken down from the heavenly realms, and the the stars turned their backs.

Plight of the joyless calculator
Once there lived a lonely calculator in a giant field of poppies. The world revolved around it slowly and for decades it remained untouched. Many suns rose and set and the calculator lay in the field, without a care in the world. Things started to change slowly. At first the calculator hardly noticed. Days began to pass by faster. The days became darker and the nights brighter. It was only a matter of time before the fine line between day and night faded. The darkness and the light merged in a confusing pattern of chaos. Time passed by in the way it always had. But the feeling of satisfaction the calculator had, just lying there, was no more. No more could he be content lying in the field while the sun rose and set as it pleased. As time went on the calculator forgot who it was. It just lay there with bittersweet memories of his past when the days were full of joy and satisfaction. Those days when he would just stare at the sky all day and be entertained by everything. Now, though there was a lot more happening, that feeling of content he had known ceased to exist within him. The sky bored him. The clouds were no longer exciting to observe. The stars didn't stir up the feeling of anticipation that they used to. Desperate to find joy again, the calculator turned sideways. He expected the poppies in the field to give him what he was looking for. He was severely disappointed. Had he gazed upon the flowers a few years ago, he would have been thrilled at the sight. The field stretched out endlessly with thousands of beautiful flowers. But he couldn't see their beauty anymore. He turned to the other side, praying there would be something of interest there. It was the same, except for a few trees here and there. Tears fell out of his eyes as he realized that the joy he had once known had ceased to exist. As the tears fell and collected in a small puddle, he realized that there was still one direction he hadn't tried looking at. He wasn't expecting to find the joy he wanted by facing the ground. But everything else had failed him. This was the last remaining option. He had to make an attempt. He slowly turned himself to face the ground. He put in all his effort and energy. His heart fought against his mind as he forced himself to turn over. As he turned to the ground, he found what he expected, but not what he wanted. He saw nothing. He just stared at the blackness of the ground. And he remains staring at the blackness to this day, knowing there is no hope of finding joy again.
